For the first time in several years, residents have an opportunity to tour the Lincoln Heritage House at Freeman Lake Park and learn its history.
Hardin County Historical Society president Twylane Van Lahr said the cabin will be available to tour from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tours will be available the same days and times the first weekend of every month of the summer.
Following this weekend, tours are set for July 7-8, Aug. 4-5 and Sept. 1-2.
Costumed characters and local historians will be on hand to share stories of Hardin County history, Van Lahr said. Lemonade, cookies and water are provided.
“It is our goal to draw more people to the site and encourage the community to visit,” she said. “We welcome anyone interested in history to join this project by volunteering a few hours of your time.”
The structure, which was built sometime between 1789 and 1805, originally was restored by the Historical Society in the 1970s, and again repaired by the city in 2005. The cabin burned in the spring of 2009. After much discussion about investing more money into the facility, it was rebuilt in 2010 with money from the city and Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau.
