There’s something downright lovely about a town where you can fill your day with fun and not spend a dime. That’s Elizabethtown for you. It’s sweet, welcoming, and full of little surprises if you know where to look, and honey, I do. So grab your walking shoes, pack a snack (or three), and come see why I’m always saying, “You don’t have to spend money to make memories in Etown.”

Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear

Swope’s isn’t just for car lovers, although if you are one, you’re in for a treat. This collection of beautifully restored vintage cars is open to the public, and it’s completely free to walk through. You’ll find everything from shiny classics to the kind of cars you saw in movies growing up. The staff might even tell you a story or two if you linger long enough.classic cars at swope cars of yesteryear museum

Hardin County History Museum

Right downtown in an old post office building sits a quiet little treasure trove of history. It’s full of artifacts from days gone by and the kind of place where you walk in curious and walk out saying, “Well, I’ll be darned, I never knew that.” I pop in every so often just to learn something new.a family looking a display case at the hardin co. history museum

“Your Gear Is Here” Program

This one feels like a secret I shouldn’t even be telling. If you want to try pickleball, cast a line, or give disc golf a whirl, Etown’s got you covered. The city will loan you the gear for free so you can get outside and give it a go. Just bring your ID and a sense of adventure.Video Thumbnail - youtube - Your Gear Is Here: Rent Fishing Equipment at Freeman Lake

Freeman Lake Park

This is where I like to go when I need a breath of fresh air. Walking trails, lake views, picnic spots, playgrounds—it’s all here, and it’s all free. You’ll often find folks walking their dogs, tossing frisbees, or just watching the ducks float by.a mother and son relaxing by freeman lake

Historic Buildings by the Lake

Near the lake, there’s a little pocket of history just waiting to be noticed. The log cabin, the schoolhouse, and the Lincoln Heritage House feel like time capsules from another era. I like to walk by and imagine the stories those walls could tell, especially the ones from the one-room schoolhouse. Can you imagine teaching eight grades at the same time? Bless ‘em.A historic two-story log cabin surrounded by lush green trees, with a small group of visitors, including adults and children, walking towards it on a grassy yard, enclosed by a wooden fence.

Funtopia and The Oasis Playgrounds

Etown has two standout playgrounds: Funtopia at American Legion Park and The Oasis at Freeman Lake. Both are colorful, creative, and built for fun. And yes, they’re perfect for kids of all ages (even the grown-up kind). Whether your little ones need to run wild or you just need a bench and a breeze, you’ll find both here.a little boy running around the funtopia playground

Elizabethtown Nature Park and Veterans Tribute

With 104 acres of open space and winding trails, this park is perfect for a peaceful walk or a bike ride through the trees. At the heart of the park, you’ll find a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance. The tribute honors all veterans, past and present, who have served with courage, sacrifice, and pride. The circular 90-foot design features a star-shaped walkway where visitors can reflect and take in the five life-size bronze sculptures, each representing a branch of the U.S. military. It’s a place that truly reminds you what service and freedom mean.Veterans Tribute

From peaceful trails and playground giggles to vintage cars and stories from the past, this town is full of heart and history just waiting to be discovered.
