Best Trails to Welcome the Season

Spring is finally here in Elizabethtown, Kentucky (or Etown, as we locals call it), and to me that screams “perfect chance to check out the best trails for hiking” right in our own backyard. The weather is warming up, the days are getting longer, and our sprawling parks and picturesque landscapes are calling your name. If you’re ready to welcome the season with some fresh air and outdoor adventures, you’re in the right place.

Whether you’re a first-timer lacing up your boots for the first time or a seasoned hiker looking for that perfect spring vibe, Elizabethtown has over 20 trails and some of the best trails around. We’re Kentucky’s first Urban Trail Town, after all! Today I’m sharing my top spring hiking essentials, the best trails for hiking (and the best trails for families to hike), plus tips to make your outing safe, fun, and full of those wildflower moments we all love.

Which Type of Hiker Are You?

Let’s figure this out together so you can pick the perfect spot.

The Beginner Hiker

If you’re new to the trails or just want something easy on the legs, start at Freeman Lake Park. The trails here are a breathtaking nature trail that’s perfect for hiking, biking, or simply taking in the outdoors at your own pace. Sections are paved with close access to parking, and you’ll get gorgeous views of the lake the whole way. It’s about a 5-mile loop you can shorten as needed.

The Family Hiker

Best Trails for Families to Hike

Got the whole crew? Head straight to the Elizabethtown Nature Park. This 104-acre gem features gently rolling former pasture land with paved paths and open green space that make it easy for everyone—from little ones to grandparents—to enjoy a full afternoon outdoors. Freeman Creek meanders through the park, and the flat, family-friendly layout means strollers roll easy and kids can run without worry. It connects right to the Freeman Lake trails too, so you can extend the adventure if the crew still has energy!

The Pet-Loving Hiker

Don’t leave your furry friend behind! All of the trails are dog-friendly and a perfect way to burn some of your pal’s extra energy. Clip on that leash and enjoy hiking together. Local tip - swing by the Freeman Lake Dog Park with its two fenced areas—one for small dogs and another for large dogs—complete with water sources and benches. It’s guaranteed fun for your four-legged family member.

The Wildflower Spotter

Spring in Etown means wildflowers popping up everywhere, and the Elizabethtown Nature Park is my go-to for spotting them. Wander the gently rolling paths and keep an eye out for colorful blooms along Freeman Creek and in the open meadows. The trails at Freeman Lake offer shoreline views with even more seasonal surprises. Pack your camera (and maybe a field guide) because these little pops of color make every hike feel like a treasure hunt!

Spring Hiking Essentials: Don’t Hit the Trail Without These

Before you head out on the best trails for hiking, here are a few quick tips from your local guide:

  • Bring your water bottle! Even on mild spring days, staying hydrated keeps the energy up—especially when you’re stopping every few feet to snap wildflower pics.

  • Wear comfortable layers and sturdy shoes. Mornings can still be crisp, but afternoons warm up fast.

  • Check the weather and trail conditions. Our Greenspace trails are well-maintained, but a quick look at greenspaceky.com never hurts.

  • Pack snacks and sunscreen. A lakeside picnic at Freeman Lake hits different after a good hike.

  • For beginners: Start early, go slow, and remember—it’s about enjoying the outdoors, not racing to the finish.

These simple steps make every outing smoother, whether you’re exploring outdoor attractions at Freeman Lake or soaking up the peaceful woods at the Nature Park.

Life is better on the trails, y’all. So what are you waiting for? Lace up those walking shoes, grab the family (and the dog if they’re coming), and head out to welcome spring the Etown way. Each trail offers its own unique experience and a chance to see the beauty of Elizabethtown from a whole new perspective.
