Introducing the Buffalo Lake Connector
The highly anticipated Buffalo Lake Connector is set to create a scenic link between Elizabethtown's hotel district and the heart of downtown. This unique trail will wind around Buffalo Lake, offering stunning lookout points along the levee near the railroad tracks, before descending into the historic Haycraft neighborhood.
Inspired by Kentucky’s natural beauty, the trail's design will incorporate limestone and iron elements, adding a local touch to the construction. Phase I of the project, currently underway, focuses on connecting the hotel area near I-65 with downtown Elizabethtown. Future phases (II and III) will expand the trail system, eventually leading to the creation of a "Discovery Zone," a vibrant green space designed for hikers, runners, and cyclists.
Set to officially open in Spring 2025, the first phase of the trail will feature 10- to 12-foot wide multi-use paths, two new iron bridges crossing Valley Creek and Buffalo Creek, and seating areas crafted from large limestone blocks. The trail will also connect to Elizabethtown's Greenbelt Trail System, further enhancing the city's outdoor recreation opportunities.
Key features include:
- Trail length: About 1.5 miles of paved shared use path
- Trailheads: Located at Commerce Drive and in Downtown Elizabethtown (Haycraft District)
- Amenities: Benches, informal seating, lighting, and scenic overlooks
- Multi-use pathways: Ideal for walkers, runners, and cyclists
- ADA accessible
As a future hub of outdoor activity, the Buffalo Lake Connector is set to be a beautiful addition to Elizabethtown’s growing network of trails, offering locals and visitors a peaceful escape in nature while exploring the city.
