A Rainy Day Fall Guide to Etown

Fall in Etown is usually all about those crisp walks around Freeman Lake and catching the first bits of color on the trails. But some days the sky just opens up and your outdoor plans get washed out. Don’t sweat it—I’ve got you. When the rain shows up, we just shift gears and head inside. Here’s my go-to list for indoor attractions, local shops, and places to eat so a rainy fall day still feels like a good one.

Indoor Attractions That Keep the Fun Going

If the weather’s keeping you off the trails, start at Xtreme Arcade. It’s one of the biggest arcades in the area, with a solid mix of classic and newer games plus plenty of attractions under one roof. You’ll find 18 holes of indoor mini golf, five lanes of mini bowling, and axe throwing with high-tech targets. There’s no entry fee—you just pay for what you want to play—so it’s easy to stop in for an hour or stay longer. Families and mixed-age groups do well here.

Malibu Jack’s is another strong rainy-day option. This big indoor theme park has go-karts on an indoor track, laser tag, mini golf, duckpin bowling, a full arcade, and the Twist N Shout spinning coaster. There’s also a soft-play zone geared toward younger kids. It’s the kind of place where you can bounce between activities without ever stepping outside, and it works for both kids and adults who still like a little competition.

For something more active, Sky’s the Limit is the local trampoline and adventure park. Kids (and plenty of grown-ups) can jump, climb, and burn off energy when everyone’s been stuck inside. They offer different jump times and even toddler-friendly sessions on certain days.

History folks should check out the Hardin County History Museum or Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum. Both are free. The History Museum walks you through local stories, artifacts, and Hardin County’s past, while Swope’s is packed with classic cars from the early 1900s through the 1960s—everything from Model Ts to muscle cars—with friendly staff who often share the stories behind the vehicles. And if you’re in the mood for a movie, check the Historic State Theater’s calendar for special screenings, or catch a current release at Crowne Pointe Theatre.

Local Shops for a Cozy Browse

A rainy day is a good excuse to explore some of Etown’s local shops. Here are a few spots worth a look.

Denizen is one of my favorites—plants, candles, socks, and little home goods that feel cozy when it’s gray outside. The sisters who run it have a good eye for things that make a space feel warmer. That Cute Little Shop and The Bug’s Ear are solid for gifts, trendy pieces, or just picking up something fun. J. Bradley’s has more options if you’re shopping for the guys in your group.

If you like hunting for finds, the Elizabethtown Peddlers Mall is a big indoor spot filled with vintage pieces, furniture, collectibles, and random cool stuff from local vendors. And don’t miss Birdwhistell Books and New Style Records—they’re right downtown and make a perfect rainy-day stop. You can grab a new or used book and some vinyl in one visit, which feels especially right when the weather’s keeping you inside.

Places to Eat (and Linger)

When the weather’s rough, I lean toward spots where you can settle in and not feel rushed.

Social Food Hall is ideal for groups. You’ve got wood-fired pizza at Maillard Wood Fired Kitchen, sushi and ramen at Wasabi Bistro, smashburgers and more at other counters, plus a big self-pour tap wall with beer, wine, and cocktails. They also have duckpin bowling and arcade games if anyone gets restless between bites. HubHaus is another favorite—house-brewed craft beer, solid food, and retro arcade games all under one roof.

J.R. Neighbors does great burgers, salads and signature entrees. If you want something a little more special, the Cavern Club underneath has that speakeasy vibe. For a sweet pause, Kuddy’s Sips & Sweets is perfect for a craft soda, or ice cream while you wait out the next wave of rain. And if you’re in a bourbon mood, Bourbon Barrel Tavern has one of the larger selections around and a warm seat to linger in.
